ON MY BOOK SHELF

A new book has appeared on my shelf of children's picture books. Mine!

RAIN
by Marge Malwitz

My husband, Nelson, used the online Blurb program to create this beautiful hardcover book from the scanned pages of Sketchbook Project 2011, RAIN.

A wonderful birthday present! Thank you, my dear!

Some book pages tomorrow.

As always-click on photos to enlarge.

I blogged the creative process of making RAIN. Click to see.

STUDIO & SCANNING

I worked in the studio on Rahab this morning, stitching down the wall. Continuing on that tomorrow.

Received email from Art House Co-op in Brooklyn NY, that RAIN, my Sketchbook Project 2011, has been scanned & is on their website. Click to see.

Besides a great look at the sketchbook pages, the webpage also features some of my work in an online portfolio. Art House did a good job on the scanning.

RAIN VIDEO

We shot a video here at home before I sent my sketchbook off to the Brooklyn Art Library. Nelson had me page through the book, reading the story & giving simple explanations of how the pages were created.

Click RAIN to see the video.

RAIN is one of 10,000 sketchbooks that can be viewed for one more week at the Brooklyn Art Library, NYC. From Brooklyn all the books will travel together to other locations around the US for the next year.

Me and RAIN down at the Brooklyn Art Library. See previous posts for photos and story about seeing the 'show'.

REMAKING DRIZZLE

WHOOOOPS! I missed scanning the drizzle page of the RAIN book.

The book is now down at the Brooklyn Library. I received word this week that it arrived.

My book is part of the mega event - Sketchbook Project 2011. I say mega because over 28,000 people have signed up to create in these sketchbooks.

Plan on going down a week from Sunday to see it with friends. Expecting a major mob scene.

Back to missing page. My husband wants us to make a Blurb book with the RAIN book images so I recreated the missing page today. I took a lot of process photos so no problem. Tonight we'll scan it & start working on the book.

STAMPED THE STORY

Sketchbook Project 2011
a record year of rainfall

The story of all the rain is summed up on this page. Added the sun considering it had never ever rained. Fitting words on page was a challenge. Worked on spacing w/stamped words on scrap paper. Then printed on the painted paper.

I always use fabric screen printing ink for better images.

SCRAPPED IDEA

Sketchbook Project 2011
a record year of rainfall

Ripped out sky & scrapped wording. Came up with new beginning and ending. Works better.

But working on sketchbook has to wait. Need to let the tacky pages dry for a couple days.

It's almost done-end is in sight.

Starting something new tomorrow. I'm excited about it.

PATCHED

Sketchbook Project 2011
a record year of rainfall

Did not work today on sketchbook. Carried it along to share with a friend. Still keeping freezer paper between the pages when I have to close the book. It's pretty thick and doesn't close flat. Working on solution. (Below) Did patch the torn page yesterday.

TWEEKING & SOLVING

Sketchbook Project 2011
a record year for rainfall

Continued tweeking the pages to completion. Still a work in progress. Every page is fIlled with exception of first page/both sides-saving for title/introduction & final back page. (Bottom photo) Problem solving the tearing of the perforated pages by reinforcing with addtional fabric used in the collage-both sides of tear.

STUDIO LIGHTING

Sketchbook Project 2011
a record year of rainfall

Worked in morning and late afternoon. What a difference the morning natural light makes-cool and clear. Pages on the way to completion. Fixing and adding: stamping, polymer varnish, fabric scraps & reinforcing pgs. Using clothespins to keep the pgs apart while drying.

Art friend, Jo Reimer, in Oregon is doing the Sketchbook Project too. Different theme and different approach. Click & see!

MATTE VARNISH & STITCHING WIND

Sketchbook Project
a record year of rain fall

Noticing some acrylic pages are sticking together-lifting paint off. Will touch up. Experimenting. Thin coat of matte varnish might seal the paint.

2 pg spread-machine stitched 'wind' & waves of pastels into wet acrylics.
