SALON HAPPENS

The doors are revolving faster than I can keep up with!

Marcia has come, created and left on 5/21. I've fallen way behind documenting her time here.  Stay tuned to see the beautiful collaged accordion books she started here and is completing back in Seattle.

A professional I know calls what happens in my studio - Salon. Sounds exotic. But really it all boils down to nonstop conversation, creating, encouragement and hanging out.

Yesterday my friend, Pat (recently returned from 3 months leading an art school in Italy) and her brother, Chef Pierre (actually Peter) entered the salon!  And took over the kitchen!

As Pat and I created, Peter read excerpts from the latest novel he's writing. Captivating! Now that really does have the ring of salon.

MARCIA RETURNS

Marcia was here last March 2011 to learn everything she could from me, about taking art cross culture.

2 links that share the story of Marcia in my studio last year: start  conclusion

I kid her a lot about my passing the baton on to her, but really in a significant way, that is exactly what has happened.

From my place she went on short term trips to Nicaragua, Hungary, and Cambodia, putting into practice all that she learned.

She returned last week to continue the art mentoring, picking up where we left off.

A couple photos taken in my art studio, at the beginning of our week.

Marcia's personal journey unfolds in the next posts.

"EVERY CLOUD..."

Several weeks ago I started a new series titled, Currents. Take a look.

These collages were inspired by word pictures of rain, storm, clouds, weather...all from the book of Job.

In particular this verse fragment grabbed my attention:

Every cloud is a flag to Your faithfulness. Psalm 57:10b The Message

Today I finished and mailed off these wedding rehearsal dinner invitations for our son, Jonathan's marriage to Eileen in June. The theme for the party is God's Faithfulness, inspired by that verse.

Shown are the invitations with 20 different little paintings of sky and clouds, made with machine stitched painted papers.

Click on the photos for closer look.

Marcia has come and gone for a whole week. Before she arrived, Martha was here for a very short visit. We never even got a picture!

No time to blog when Marcia was here, but I did take pictures. This week I'll  catch up and show and tell you what happened in my studio during Marcia's time here. I'm back to blogging.

"ALL TRIBES" - EDITION OF 50

Partnering with my friend Nancy Green @World Relief again.  I gave her permission to have a second edition of 50 giclees printed of  my quilt, "All Tribes Under the Cross".  They will be a gift to those making financial gifts to World Relief.  It is a great way for me to continue to support this great organization that does life changing work in 3rd world countries around the globe. I took this photo yesterday, after signing all 50.

Here's my trip to World Relief Rwanda where I used this quilt and 3 others in the forgiveness and reconciliation workshops I taught with my friend Becca Smith who at that time was living in RW with her husband, Phil,  the then director of WR Rwanda:   Trip to Rwanda-finding their stories in the quilts;

IT'S RAINING WAY OUT THERE!

Working on the next collage in the Currents series.  The 'rain' fabric is something I painted a while back - acrylics on wet canvas.  The 'rain' in the distance reminds me of being on a Florida beach,  looking way out at the panorama across the horizon line - sun in one area, raining in another.  What a show watching the weather performance while sitting on the beach!  More to do on this one, but here's the start.

STITCHING POURING RAIN

Made 2 samples.

Decision to move ahead with stitching.

A TIME TO STITCH - A TIME TO TEAR OUT

I made a '3 layer sandwich' - as quiltmakers like to say: top, batting & backing.

Machine stitched around the clouds to emphasize them.  I thought the stitching gunked it up. Tore it out!

What about the bottom fabric? Will I machine quilt around the pouring rain? I'll make some samples before I stitch the real thing.

I do want to use the metallic effect thread though - but how will that look?  OK, another sample.

Actually I am wondering if this should be a quilt at all!  Maybe the fabrics should just be collaged on the BFK paper!

The process continues on this next piece in the Currents series...

ALL IN FABRIC

Worked on 2 new pieces today in the Currents series. All in fabric.  Both about rain. Inspired by word pictures from Job.  Still in flux.

May be small quilts. Looking forward to working on them tomorrow!  Check back.
